How to Build an unbeatable Audition Book (Part 1)

“Auditions are like first dates for your voice.”

Whether you’re stepping into the spotlight for a musical theater audition or just showing off your skills, the goal is to make that first impression count. So, how do you ensure the audition panel remembers you from amongst a sea of talented performers? The secret lies in crafting the perfect audition cut. It's your chance to show off your vocal chops, connect emotionally, and, most importantly, leave them wanting more. (Oh yeah!) Ready to learn how to ace your next audition cut? Grab a cup of coffee (or tea — we’re not judging), and let’s dive in!

1️⃣ Tell a Good Story

You know how every great song has a beginning, middle, and end? Well, even your 16- or 32-bar cut needs to follow that formula. It’s all about storytelling! Start by setting the emotional tone—whether it’s longing, joy, or heartbreak. Then, build some intensity (hello, high notes/belting!), and finish with a resolution, leaving the audience satisfied. Think of it like telling your favorite joke: it has to have a punchline to land! Work with your voice teacher or vocal coach to identify the most impactful section of the song that will leave an impression in just a few bars. When you create that story arc, your cut will sing and stand out!

2️⃣ Pick a Song That Speaks to You

Sure, “Defying Gravity” and “Let It Go” are fan favorites, but they’re not for everyone. No really. Audition panels can spot a fake — aka a song that you don’t genuinely connect with — from a mile away. So, choose wisely, friends. Pick a song that you love, one that speaks to your soul, so you can truly sell it. When you have that deep connection, your authenticity will shine through. Unsure what to pick? A coach can help you figure out which songs fit your vocal range and emotional depth to make the best impression.

3️⃣ Keep It Snappy: Follow the Guidelines

We get it — your entire performance career might not fit into 16 bars. But that’s the challenge of the audition world. And this is a career of auditioning, not just performing. Audition panels are often working with tight time limits, so it’s your job to pick a song section that showcases your range and emotion while keeping things concise. Some auditions ask for 16 bars, others 32, or even 8 — so make sure you’re following the rules (and don’t be that person who goes over — they will cut you off!). The key is to hit the high points of your vocal range without wasting a single moment. If you’re unsure about how to make your cut fit, that’s where a vocal coach can come in handy — they’ll help you craft a streamlined, high-impact performance that feels like you.

4️⃣ Get to the Good Stuff

We’ve all heard the saying, “Don’t bury the lead.” Well, when it comes to audition cuts, the lead is everything. Ditch the long intros, the drawn-out outros, and anything that doesn’t directly show off your vocal and emotional range. Dive straight into the crux of the song — the part that shows your power, vulnerability, and everything in between. After all, in an audition, there’s no time for fluff. The song should grab attention from the very first note and hold it until the final chord. If you don’t know which section of the song to choose, a voice teacher can help you identify the most “audition-worthy” part that will grab the panel’s attention. (Hint: it's usually the end!)

👉 Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll cover how to connect emotionally, build confidence, and make sure your audition cut is the perfect fit for both you and the role you’re chasing. See you there!
