To Sit or To Stand?
Which is better for singing? Sitting or Standing? Or does it matter?
The Perfect Posture for Singing: Sit, Stand, and Sing!
Hey. It’s Deborah Conquest from Conquest Voice Studio. Let’s talk posture! You’ve probably heard a lot about the “perfect” posture for singing, but guess what? There isn’t just one perfect way to do it. Whether you're standing tall or sitting comfy, the key is finding a posture that helps you sound awesome while staying comfortable.
Sitting Pretty: Posture Tips for Singers
If you're sitting while singing (because let’s be real, sometimes standing just isn’t the vibe), here are a few tips to make sure you can sing your best:
Feet on the Floor!
First thing’s first—make sure your feet are flat on the floor. If you’re on the shorter side and your feet just won’t reach, grab a footrest or a stool to give your feet some love. You’ll feel more grounded and your body will thank you.Hips & Knees at 90 Degrees
Think of your hips and knees as forming a nice, cozy 90-degree angle. This helps your body stay balanced and open, so you can take full, easy breaths. No slouching, no crossing your legs—keep it comfy and upright!Head Held High
Imagine there’s a golden thread gently pulling you up from the top of your head. You want your head and neck aligned with your spine—no jutting your chin forward! This keeps your airways open and helps you sing with freedom and ease. You can sing!Sit Tall, Stay Relaxed
Sit tall like you’re ready to hit the stage, but don’t tense up! Relaxed shoulders, open chest, and a gentle lift from your spine will let your diaphragm do its thing, giving you control and power in every note.
Why Posture = Power
Your body is your instrument. If it’s out of alignment, your voice will be, too. Good posture = good breath control, better resonance, and less tension. Whether you're sitting or standing, when your body’s in alignment, you can sing with ease and without strain. Bonus points: you’ll sound amazing!
